Ivan Lewis Launches Community-Wide Campaign Against Graffiti And Litter

Community Offenders Set To Clean Up Graffiti

Following on from a successful community graffiti clean-up at Prestwich Clough this weekend, Bury South MP Ivan Lewis has launched a constituency-wide campaign against graffiti and litter.

This week he has launched a facebook group for each of the towns which make up his constituency and is urging interested residents to contact him via the facebook groups, email (ivanlewis@burysouth.fsnet.co.uk), telephone 773 5500 or letter to 381 Bury New Road, Prestwich, Manchester M25 1AW. Have your Say below.

“The campaign will urge local residents and traders to identify grot-spots, make the council aware of areas which require attention, support residents where they can to join together in clean-up activities, press the council to make graffiti-removal kits available for everyone in Bury South and demand a tougher approach to those who engage in mindless graffiti and throw away litter with no respect for the local environment.”

Mr Lewis will also be working with local schools to engage pupils and parents in the campaign.

Mr Lewis also revealed he has opened discussions with the local Probation service with a view to community service offenders being put to work to clean up graffiti.

Ivan Lewis stated, “Graffiti and litter are hallmarks of the “couldn’t care less” attitude which often leads to crime. It is time we fought back against the small minority who have no respect for their neighbours or local environment. Bury council have a duty to take this issue more seriously and work in partnership with other agencies to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to graffiti and litter. Alongside this where possible, local residents can do their bit by joining forces to clean up particular hot-spot areas in their neighbourhood.”

“Saying No to graffiti and litter means saying yes to respect and pride in our community.”

Hi all, I have been overwhelmed by the level of public support for a zero-tolerance approach to litter and graffiti. I think most people agree that it’s not only bad for the environment but signifies a ‘couldn’t care less’ approach to your fellow citizens and local neighbourhood. On reflection, I agree with those who are concerned about posting pictures of specific tags. However, I still think it is both important and necessary to identify the location of particular graffiti and litter hotspots. I am currently in discussion with the probation service about getting people serving community sentences to clean up graffiti in our area. I will keep you informed of progress. Ivan Lewis
