Cameron should honour his pledge on foreign aid

Posted on:

Ivan Lewis MP, Labour’s Shadow International Development Secretary, responding to reports that David Cameron will drop his pledge to enshrine the UK’s foreign aid commitment into law, said:

“David Cameron made a manifesto promise to enshrine in law the UK’s commitment to spend 0.7% of Gross National income on aid, but it now seems that he’s set to abandon it like so many other of the pre-election claims he made when he wanted to secure people’s votes.

“Enshrining the link between aid and national income in law would mean our future contribution to the fight against world poverty would be permanently linked to the state of our nation’s finances, increasing in the good times and reducing when times are hard.

“If David Cameron was serious about delivering on international aid he’d honour the commitment he made. Instead it seems this will become just another in a long list of broken promises.”
