Radcliffe Labour supports Bury’s new Credit Union

Posted on:

Radcliffe Labour Party held a street stall at Radcliffe piazza today in a bid to raise awareness of Bury’s new Credit Union that will be officially launched on 24 October 2013.

Information about the Credit Union was handed out to members of the public together with membership forms. The Credit Union is a partnership with Manchester Credit Union, Bury Council and Bury’s Six Town Housing.

Members of the Credit Union will be offered competitive rates on their deposits and also ethical rates on sums they borrow. At the end of each year the Union will try and issue a dividend to members.

Ivan Lewis MP said “I think having a Credit Union is a fantastic idea. We want to develop a culture of responsible saving, but when people do need to borrow money they can do so at affordable rates and not be held hostage by a loan shark or pay day lender. A lot of credit (if you pardon the pun!) must go to  Bury Council for driving this initiative forward.”

Radcliffe West Councillor Rishi Shori said “This Credit Union can make a real difference to people’s lives but it needs the support of everyone in our community. Its a great way to earn good rates of interest on your savings and also avoid borrowing at extortionate levels.”

Radcliffe North Councillor Jane Lewis said “Action is always better than words. There is a real need for a Credit Union in Bury and I would urge people to consider joining after the official launch. This is something that local people can invest in and we can all share the benefits in a responsible and ethical manner.”
